High-Performance Flap Diverter Dampers: The Toggle Arm Advantage

In demanding industrial environments—from Gas Turbine Exhaust systems to Waste Heat Recovery Units (WHRU)—the ability to redirect gas flow with precision and reliability is critical. Damper Technology Ltd (DTL) provides custom-engineered Flap Diverter Dampers designed to handle extreme temperatures and high-velocity flows, ensuring maximum plant efficiency and safety.

While standard diverters offer basic flow control, DTL’s specialized Toggle Arm design elevates performance by providing superior sealing force and mechanical longevity.

What is a Flap Diverter Damper?

A Flap Diverter (or T-Diverter) is a three-way valve used to direct exhaust gases either to a heat recovery system or through a bypass stack to the atmosphere. Unlike multi-louvre dampers, a flap diverter uses a single reinforced blade pivoting 90 degrees. This design minimizes pressure drop and simplifies the flow path, making it the industry standard for gas turbine applications.

The Benefits of Flap Diverters

Choosing a flap diverter for your process offers several key operational advantages:

  • Low Pressure Drop: The single-blade design provides a clear flow path, reducing turbulence and backpressure on the turbine.
  • Rapid Changeover: Engineered for fast actuation, allowing for quick transitions between bypass and recovery modes.
  • Thermal Flexibility: Specifically designed to withstand rapid temperature fluctuations without warping or binding.
  • Space Efficiency: The “T-configuration” allows for a compact footprint compared to installing multiple individual dampers.

Why Choose the Toggle Arm Design?

At DTL, we often recommend the Toggle Arm (or Toggle Linkage) mechanism for high-specification projects. This design utilizes a unique kinematic linkage system to move the flap blade.

1. Superior Sealing Force

The toggle arm mechanism provides a mechanical advantage as the blade approaches the seat. As the arm “toggles” into the closed position, it exerts a massive, uniform force across the seal perimeter, ensuring higher sealing efficiency—up to 100% when used with seal air systems.

2. Vibration Resistance

In high-velocity gas flows, flap blades can be prone to “flutter.” The toggle arm provides a rigid mechanical lock in the end positions, significantly reducing vibration and wear on the drive train and bearings.

3. Compensation for Thermal Expansion

Industrial processes involve extreme heat. The toggle arm design is inherently expansion-compensated, allowing the damper body and blade to expand at different rates without compromising the seal integrity or risking mechanical seizure.

4. Reduced Actuator Load

Because the linkage provides mechanical leverage at the point of closure, smaller, more efficient actuators can be used to achieve the necessary sealing pressures, reducing overall energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Some technical terms you might hear relating to diverters.
Fabricated

Unlike valves, dampers are generally designed and fabricated to order, according to your application.

Actuator

The device used to operate the damper. We provide pneumatic, electric, hydraulic or manual actuation.

Blade Seals

Damper blades are sometimes fitted with metallic seals to improve the sealing efficiency of the damper.

Toggle Arm

The special linkage system designed to move the flap blade with increased efficiency and reduced torque.
